Sand sifting star

The Sand Sifting Sea Star is a fascinating and hardworking member of any established reef aquarium, spending its days gliding beneath and across the sand bed in search of detritus, uneaten food, and tiny organisms. Its natural burrowing behavior helps keep the substrate clean, aerated, and free of compacted areas, making it a popular addition to larger marine systems.

With its tan, gray, or mottled coloration, the Sand Sifting Sea Star blends seamlessly into the substrate, often disappearing beneath the sand before emerging elsewhere in the aquarium. While peaceful and completely reef safe with corals, it relies on a mature sand bed rich in microfauna for long-term success.

Because these sea stars consume beneficial organisms living within the sand, they are best suited to established aquariums with deep, mature sand beds rather than newer systems.
