The Bariene Tang, also known as the Blackspot Surgeonfish, is an impressive and relatively uncommon member of the Acanthurus family. As it matures, this fish develops a striking combination of olive-brown to blue-grey coloration, intricate blue horizontal markings, yellow fins and a distinctive dark spot behind the eye.

Juvenile Bariene Tangs tend to have more subdued coloration, but adults can become absolutely spectacular. Their coloration and markings become increasingly pronounced with maturity, making them an impressive centerpiece fish for a very large marine aquarium.

Bariene Tangs are powerful, active swimmers and require considerably more space than many commonly kept tang species. Adults can reach approximately 20 inches, so long-term housing should provide substantial open swimming room along with mature rockwork for grazing. (Aquatics Unlimited)

They are considered reef safe and generally leave corals and ornamental invertebrates alone. Like other Acanthurus tangs, however, they can become territorial toward other surgeonfish, particularly similarly shaped species.

Their diet should contain plenty of marine algae and nori, supplemented with spirulina-based foods and high-quality frozen and prepared marine foods. Regular feeding and excellent nutrition are important for maintaining body condition, immune health and adult coloration.
